CRP Haifeng CO2 Capture Testing Platform Engineering Study Launched in the UK-China Low Carbon Week

(Guangzhou)14 March 2016, the China Resources Power (CRP) Haifeng Testing Platform Engineering Study was launched in Guangzhou at the opening ceremony of the UK-China Low Carbon Week Event. The 230 million Yuan capture testing demonstration project building on the east side of China Resources Power Haifeng Project Unit #1 is expecting to start operation in 2017. The study will select and integrate different technical options to identify the most effective technology for large-scale CO₂ capture at China Resources Power Unit #3 and #4 project.

The Secretary General of the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre (“the Centre”) and the Senior Lecturer of University of Edinburgh Business School, Dr LIANG Xi introduced and announced the kickoff of the engineering project study, under the witness of the officials from National Centre for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation (NCSC), Guangdong Development and Reform Commission (GDDRC), British Embassy to China, British Consulate-General Guangzhou and China Resources Power (CRP). The final draft of the engineering feasibility study delivered by the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre consolidates dedicated effort and advice from excellent scientists and engineers from China, UK, Australia, US and Europe incl. GEDI, University of Edinburgh Business School, UK CCS Research Centre and Scottish CCS Centre.

“The Centre hope through working with experts from China, UK, US, and other nations, Guangdong gradually build up the first full-chain large-scale offshore CO₂ capture and storage project in China. The Haifeng testing platform project is a priority work in the Centre, we will deliver the project with high quality engineering work embedded with innovative ideas contributed by brilliant scientists around the World.” commented by the Centre director, Mr CHEN Lan.

“2016 is the 10^th year of British Embassy to support the CCS development in South China. UK hopes to help Guangdong develop the CCS technology as an effective way for emission reduction, and then provide assistance for reducing the cost of global CCS technology.” Mr Matthew Rous, the Consul-General of British Consulate-General Guangzhou said. “Therefore, he UK Embassy will be paying attention to CCS development in South China continually and also provide actual support.

On March 15^th, the work division workshop is held to discuss the technical work of capture and storage from April 2016 to March 2017, the feasibility studies and plans into 2020 for Guangdong CCUS Demonstration Project. Dr. LIANG Xi said, “We are doing a promising undertaking that we have received support from the Development and Reform Commission of Guangdong Province and active input from all parties. Quality takes priority as we are doing our work to get further funding.” The engaging parties of this project then discussed the detailed division of the next step work.
