CO2 Geological Utilisation Potential in China

Professor Xiaochun LI from ISRM, CAS, attended the 1st Guangdong International CCUS Expert Workshop and UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre Launch Ceremony hold on December 18, making an introduction to CO2Geological Utilisation Potential in China.

CO2 Geological Utilisation means to use minerals or environment to mineralize CO2 or EOR. The main application fields contain energy field including CO2-EORCO2-ECBMCO2-EGRCO2-ESGR, CO2-EGS and mineral resources field including CO2-EUL, CO2-EWR. Professor Li also introduced the application situation of each technology and their potential storage in theory.

The most applied technologies are CO2-EORCO2-ECBM and CO2-EUL. CO2-EOR may be applied in industry in 2020 and the contribution on carbon reduction of geological utilization could be 5 million tons (long-term contribution could be 0.1-1 billion tons).

At last, he concluded that China should focus on CCUS-EOR; research on the conceptual base of technologies above; demonstrate CO2-EOR, CO2-EWR, 10 thousand CO2-ECBM pilot and next generation of CO2-EUL; highlight the local properties while geological utilization; the government shall play an important role on CCUS. In addition, “CCS Report” will be released at the end of this year.
