CO2 Geological Utilisation Potential in China

Professor Xiaochun LI from ISRM, CAS, attended the 1st Guangdong International CCUS Expert Workshop and UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre Launch Ceremony hold on December 18, making an introduction to CO₂Geological Utilisation Potential in China.

CO₂ Geological Utilisation means to use minerals or environment to mineralize CO₂ or EOR. The main application fields contain energy field including CO₂-EOR、CO₂-ECBM、CO₂-EGR、CO₂-ESGR, CO₂-EGS and mineral resources field including CO₂-EUL, CO₂-EWR. Professor Li also introduced the application situation of each technology and their potential storage in theory.

The most applied technologies are CO₂-EOR、CO₂-ECBM and CO₂-EUL. CO₂-EOR may be applied in industry in 2020 and the contribution on carbon reduction of geological utilization could be 5 million tons (long-term contribution could be 0.1-1 billion tons).

At last, he concluded that China should focus on CCUS-EOR; research on the conceptual base of technologies above; demonstrate CO₂-EOR, CO₂-EWR, 10 thousand CO₂-ECBM pilot and next generation of CO₂-EUL; highlight the local properties while geological utilization; the government shall play an important role on CCUS. In addition, “CCS Report” will be released at the end of this year.
