The 1st International Carbon Storage Conference is Solemnly Held in Shenzhen

The 1st international carbon storage conference is held in Shenzhen Ming Wah International Convention Centre on 9th Dec, 2014. This conference is hosted by UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre, co-organized by LinksChina, sponsored by British Consulate General to Guangzhou and Global CCS institute. Specialists from Guangdong Development and Reform Commission, British Consulate General, CNOOC Shenzhen and Guangzhou institute have an in depth discussion on the potential and development of carbon storage in Guangdong, and the important carbon storage projects in China and abroad.

Ms CHEN Xiaofang from Guangdong DRC, Ms ZAI Pei from British Consulate General, and Mr CHEN Lan, the director of UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre address opening speech, in which express the expectations on the development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage in Guangdong. The Main topics include 4 parts: introduction on improvement in carbon storage in Pearl River Mouth Region; international experience and lessons from large-scale projects; offshore platforms and pipelines design; and multiphase fluids simulation study.

Professor ZHOU Di and LI Pengchun from Chinese Academy of Sciences, South China Sea Institute of Oceanology give in depth presentations on site selection and assessments on offshore pipelines and platforms. Under the support of CNOOC, HZ 32-3, HZ 21-1, XJ 24-3, LF 2-1 are selected as candidate sites for carbon storage. The work is still progressing smoothly. LF 2-1 and XJ 24-3 are potential saline aquifers for storage, but the sealing security of upper formations still need further investigations for the lack of geological information and hydrocarbon production infrastructures. Based on primary assessment, HZ 21-1 A/B platforms could be used for CO2 injection after proper retrofits. However, the effects after CO2 injection and the relationship with hydrocarbon explorations nearby need further discussion with hydrocarbon companies.

Mr YANG Wangjun, Ms LIN Yao and Ms Jia Bing from CNOOC Shenzhen give detailed explanations on the geological conditions and well completion of Huizhou 21-1 oil field. Thereafter, specialists have heated discussions on the structure, pressure regime and sealing capacity of caprocks, and get output with satisfactory.

After a short lunch and tea break, Professor Stuart Haszeldine from Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage Centre give a speech on CCS potential, study process and important projects in UK North Sea, making audience have general understandings on the development history and technology frontier of carbon storage. Mr Mike Carpenter from DNV-GL gives an introduction on information and application of RP-J202 AND RP-J203, and also gives examples on the security experiments on CO2 transport pipelines.

Besides, Professor JIANG Xi from the University of Lancaster, Dr Bruce Hill from American Clean Air Force Task, and Professor WEI Ning from CAS Institute of Rocks and Soil Mechanics, and Mr Bill Senior from CCS consultancy also give excellent speech on carbon storage numerical simulation, innovation on CO2-EOR, pre-feasibility study on saline aquifers, and CCS projects progress in the UK. Specialists also have warm discussions in the following session.
