Brussels Workshop on Enhanced Membranes to Reduce CO2 Capture Cost

An industrial workshop is to be hosted by the EU-funded project, NANOMEMC2, in Brusselson 11th April to show how advances in enhanced membrane technology can boost carboncapture viability by reducing the costs and energy penalty associated with CO2 capture.

The European Commission-funded NANOMEMC2 project comprises a number of leading academic institutions and companies. Through the development of innovative membranes and membrane processes, it aims to reduce the limitations which currently make pre- and post-combustion CO2 capture unattractive.

The Brussels event will bring together various stakeholders to review European policies and share industry progress. NANOMEMC2 partners will present their views and the advances made in the NANOMEMC2 project during the workshop, which is divided into 3 sessions:

• Session 1: the future of CCS in Europe and globally

• Session 2: NANOMEMC2 : presentation of main results

• Session 3: Round Table

Membrane separation processes can be applied to many CO2 capture processes and are generally endowed with high flexibility and potentially low operating costs when compared to other capture methods. However, current materials lack the separation performance and durability needed for to be efficient and economically feasible.

The project therefore aims to fully develop the potential of membranes focusing on high flux and selectivity in order to increase efficiency and reduce the overall CCS cost below the value of 40€/tonne of CO2 avoided. NANOMEMC2 also combines research for novel membranes with the simulation and techno-economic analysis of possible schemes for efficient implementation in industrial plants.

Success in this project will allow for a radical step change in the deployment of CCS technologies across EU industry, unleashing its potential for significant CO2 emissions savings, which are key to reaching European targets for a more sustainable industry. The project received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program and, as part of this, also seeks strong collaboration with Korean counterparts on the basis of a common research path and strategy.
