Introduction to Chinese CCS R&D Activities and CCUS Association

Xiangwu KANG from the MOST attended the 1st Guangdong International CCUS Expert Workshop and UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre Launch Ceremony hold on December 18, 2013, in Guangdong Province, and made the welcome address and the keynote speech titled “Introduction to Chinese CCS R&D Activities and CCUS Association”.

He said: “To make CCUS available, we should provide a state system or an honest regulation as any other environment-friendly products. So, from the perspective of global or sate system, we must restrain and protect it with environmental policies and systems when CCUS would be deployed in a large scale. ”

He then talked about their accomplishments the MOST has achieved to promote CCUS research and demonstration. In September, the MOST carried out “The Roadmap of CCUS Development” in 2011, which evaluated the status of CCUS in our country systematically. The Most also released “the Twelfth Five-year Plan of Chinese CCUS Technology Development”, which further state the CCUS position and role of controlling the GHG emissions and maintaining the energy sustainability. The Plan also set the development goals of CCUS for the next twenty years and made some suggestions in accordance with the deployment of CCUS in our country, mainly supporting the research on key technologies. As to CO2 application, the MOST has supported SINOPEC Shengli Oil Field, Yanchang Oil Filed, CAS CO2 mineralization, HUST CO2 oxy-combustion project. What’s more, the MOST has established the Consortium of Chinese CCUS industry and innovation, which includes almost all the organizations that are active on CCUS research.

He showed the next two works the MOST would do: 1. evaluating all CCUS projects researches after the twelfth Five-year Plan; 2. making out the Thirteenth Five-year Plan CCUS research strategic map. He then concluded that: 1. many groups of CCUS experts in our country are active at home and abroad; 2. some enterprises and research institutes in China has gained some experiences in research and demonstration of CCUS. All in all, Chinese CCUS works are at the early stage.

He proposed some suggestions based on the status of CCUS: 1. we should focus on taking strengthening CCUS research and gathering related demonstration experiences into account, specifically, we should give priority to develop CO2 application. 2. the key points of CCUS research is both improving energy efficiency, reducing costs and protecting environment. 3. taking further steps to enhance international cooperation and communications.
